Let's elaborate a little on that simple analogy with the role of a book editor: This is a person who receives the final manuscript from the author and then proceeds to correct the syntax, polish the text and perhaps make a few creative suggestions. Ideally, the editor has never seen the manuscript before, ie. never been directly associated with it's creative process. He can judge the manuscript from a fresh perspective and with an objective eye. Nowadays, as with a multimedia project, an editor can mean a whole team of people, each with a specific job, but with a clear mission: to make the project as good as it can be!
Depending upon the different media, mastering can mean different steps. Here are some concrete examples of what we do on a day to day basis:
transfer final stereo mixes into computer sequence and edit the tracks adjust levels and equalization produce a final master for replication
convert final videotape to digital video perform any color adjustments, fine tune edits author menus and navigation produce a final master for replication
digitize text, photos, artwork process audio/video elements assimilate materials into a web design upload website to ISP
In each case the objective is the same: to make the enduser's encounter with the media an enjoyable and seamless experience. With any artistic product, this is crucial. What we do in the mastering world can ultimately determine it's success in the business world. It can make or break a product.
